    Persuaders or Partisans
    By Howard Kurtz
    Washington Post Staff Writer

It should be utterly predictable, right?

The New York Times and Washington Post editorial pages beat up on George W., while the Wall Street Journal and Washington Times editorial pages doggedly defend the president.

    Well, not quite.

A new Harvard study says the conservative editorial pages are more intensely partisan, and far less willing to criticize a Republican administration than the liberal pages are to take on a Democratic administration.

They've got a list -- and it keeps growing
    Civil Liberties Watch

    by Elaine Cassel

"Though it is not yet a federal crime to criticize the government (unless you are an Arab or a Muslim), Bush plans to shut you up one way or the other.

My libertarian friends have been telling me that I should rejoice when the government does 'stupider and stupider' things.

It means a 'change is gonna come.'

Americans won't stand idly by for ever, they promise.

Meantime, the ACLU is suing the government to try to learn more about the list that targets political activists who challenge the government in entirely legal ways.

As for the list, I hope it grows to hundreds of thousands of names.

If you're not on it, you ought to be." (08/06/03)

Heavy Reproaches Against US Pentagon: Napalm Bombs In The Iraq War

[Bush wonders, Geneva Convention? What's that? --DUG]

Translation of the original PDF file from MONITOR TV , ARD , Germany

Report: Heavy accusations against US Pentagon: Napalm Bombs in Iraq-War
Reported by: John Goetz, Georg Restle / MONITOR 507

    Volker Happe (MONITOR-Moderator):

"Napalm. The Horror weapon from the Vietnam war.

It is internationally banned and outlawed, its use is forbidden by the Geneva Convention.

But nevertheless, it was used in the Iraq war by the US army.

US Rejects German Napalm Bombing Report

[It's not "Napalm," it's a 500 pound, burning fuel gel "Fire Bomb," there's SUCH a big difference!! --DUG]

08/08/03: COLOGNE - US forces used dozens of napalm-like MK-77 fire bombs during the Iraq war, according to a German television news report.

Later Thursday, US defence officials in Washington disputed the German report.

The US destroyed its entire napalm stockpile in 2001, and the MK-77 has a completely different chemical composition than napalm, the Pentagon said.

The report on ARD public television's "Monitor" current-affairs magazine show said the bombs are an outgrowth of incendiary bombs used in Korea and Vietnam by American forces.

Fire bombs rupture on impact and spread burning fuel gel onto surrounding objects.

The 500-pound MK-77 device is the only fire bomb now in service with the U.S. military.

In the 1991 Gulf War, about 500 MK-77 fire bombs were dropped by Marine Corps planes to ignite oil-filled Iraqi fire trenches, which were part of barriers constructed in southern Kuwait.

ARD had reported that confirmation of their use in this year's Iraq war came from US Marine Corps Colonel Joseph Boehm in San Diego.

He was quoted as saying that 30 MK-77 canisters were dropped during a 30-day period in the invasion of Iraq, primarily by AV-8 Harriers from relatively low altitudes.

Hiroshima Mayor Lashes Out at Bush on Atomic Bombing Anniversary

     HIROSHIMA, Japan -

Hiroshima's mayor lashed out at the United States' nuclear weapons policy during ceremonies marking the 58th anniversary of the city's atomic bombing, which caused the deaths of over 230,000 people.

Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba said the United States worshipped nuclear weapons as "God" and blamed it for jeopardizing the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.

"The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the central international agreement guiding the elimination of nuclear weapons, is on the verge of collapse," Akiba said
Wednesday in an address to some 40,000 people.

"The chief cause is US nuclear policy that, by openly declaring the possibility of a pre-emptive nuclear first strike and calling for resumed research into mini-nukes and other so-called 'useable nuclear weapons,' appears to worship nuclear weapons as God," he said.

The mayor also slammed as unjust the US-led war on Iraq, which he blamed for killing innocent civilians. "The weapons of mass destruction that served as the excuse for the war have yet to be found," he said.

Akiba strongly urged US President George W. Bush and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il to personally visit Hiroshima and "confront the reality of nuclear war".

'Dr Strangeloves' meet to plan new nuclear era

    Julian Borger in Bellevue, Nebraska
    Thursday August 7, 2003

    The Guardian

US government scientists and Pentagon officials will gather today behind tight security at a Nebraska air force base to discuss the development of a modernised arsenal of small, specialised nuclear weapons which critics believe could mark the dawn of a new era in proliferation.

The Pentagon has not released a list of the 150 people at the secret meeting, but according to leaks, they will include scientists and administrators from the three main nuclear weapons laboratories, Los Alamos, Sandia and Livermore, senior officers from the air force and strategic command, weapons contractors and civilian defence officials.

Requests by Congress to send observers were rejected, and an oversight committee which included academic nuclear experts was disbanded only a few weeks earlier.

War Critics Zero In on Pentagon Office

    Analysis - By Jim Lobe

    WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (IPS) -

On most days, the Pentagon's 'Early Bird', a daily compilation of news articles on defence-related issues mostly from the U.S. and British press, does not shy from reprinting hard-hitting stories and columns critical of the Defence Department's top leadership.

But few could help notice last week that the Bird' omitted an opinion piece distributed by the Knight-Ridder news agency by a senior Pentagon Middle East specialist, Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, who worked in the office of Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Douglas Feith until her retirement in April.

'What I saw was aberrant, pervasive and contrary to good order and discipline,''

Kwiatkowski wrote. ''If one is seeking the answers to why peculiar bits of 'intelligence' found sanctity in a presidential speech, or why the post-Saddam (Hussein) occupation (in Iraq) has been distinguished by confusion and false steps, one need look no further than the process inside the Office of the Secretary of Defence'' (OSD).

Kwiatkowski went on to charge that the operations she witnessed during her tenure in Feith's office, and particularly those of an ad hoc group known as the Office of Special Plans (OSP), constituted ''a subversion of constitutional limits on executive power and a co-optation through deceit of a large segment of the Congress''.

Kwiatkowski's charges, which tend to confirm reports and impressions offered to the press by retired officers from other intelligence agencies and their still-active but anonymous former colleagues, are likely to make her a prime witness when Congress reconvenes in September for hearings on the manipulation of intelligence to justify war against Iraq.

    Dumping On The Public

Karen Charman is an investigative journalist specializing in agriculture, health and the environment.

What would you think if you heard that radioactive materials from aging nuclear power plants and weapons complexes were going to be dumped in community landfills?

Or that they would be "recycled" into everyday consumer goods, building materials, roads, playgrounds and more just to save those who created the waste the trouble and expense of keeping it isolated?

That is exactly what the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is considering -- despite the fact that the agency is statutorily required to protect the public's health and ensure our safety in regards to the nuclear materials it regulates.

More information revealed about Israel's secret detention center

    WED 08.6.2003 2.05 PT

    Israel Insider

Israel's Channel Ten television reported Sunday night on the existence of a covert IDF prison installation, located at a secret location, where Israel holds security prisoners due to "special circumstances."

The Associated Press reported last month on the prison, known as Facility 1391, after Israel's state attorney confirmed its existence.

Human rights groups say a secret detention center is in violation of the Geneva Convention.

According to the television report, Facility 1391 is situated in a former British police building located somewhere in the country.

Access to the IDF prison is strictly limited. Attorneys, family members and International Red Cross representatives are not allowed to visit prisoners inside, the report said.

Losing our liberty in the name of fighting terrorism

    By Tom DeWeese © 2003

America may have reached a turning point on July 22, 2003 in the battle to restore and protect civil liberties threatened by the Patriot Act.

On that day the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to pass two amendments that restore the rule of law by denying the Justice Department the ability to sneak into private homes and peek at private records without a warrant.

The House also unanimously passed an amendment to prohibit the Justice Department from forcing libraries and bookstores to turn over records of books read by their patrons.

These are important victories for the forces of liberty in the battle to keep an all-powerful Big Brother government from invading every aspect of our private lives under the excuse of fighting terrorism.
However, the victory may be short lived because the Bush Administration is applying pressure on Senate leadership to keep the provisions intact.

As a result, the Senate may fail to support the amendments in its version of the bill, voiding the House action.

To protect our liberty, Americans must understand the threat posed by the Patriot Act and take action to assure that the Senate also passes the amendments.

The fact is, Americans who have blindly trusted the government to protect them from the terrorist threat are not safer.

However using that excuse, American liberty is under serious threat from our own government.

$2 Billion a Day: Where is it Going?

    By Ed Henry

Two thousand million a day, that's the minimum the Bush administration is borrowing every day, weekends and holidays included.

In the month of July, 2003, the national debt increased $81 billion.

That's an average of $2.6 billion a day (TWENTY SIX HUNDRED MILLION PER DAY), all on the tab for you and your grandchildren to pay back some day.

Three point eight percent (roughly 4 percent) of the money borrowed in just one day, less than what the government borrows in one hour, would have saved the AmeriCorps organization of volunteer teachers and college graduates mentoring our poorly educated public school students who cannot read or write.

But Congress left on its month long summer vacation without approving an emergency $100 million it would have taken to save 50 percent of these volunteers.

And the school year will be underway before Congress goes back to playing their games at our expense.

U.S. Limits Payments to Kin of Slain Iraqi Civilians

Compensation is possible only in cases of wrongdoing or negligence.
Fatal errors and combat-related deaths are excluded.

    By Robyn Dixon
    Times Staff Writer
    August 4, 2003

BAGHDAD -- The families of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed or injured by U.S. forces will not receive compensation unless they prove clear-cut negligence or wrongdoing by soldiers, military officials said Sunday.

The policy rules out payments for tragic mistakes, such as the fatal shootings of civilians at military checkpoints, if soldiers believed it was reasonable to fire.

And incidents after May 1, when President Bush declared the end of major fighting in Iraq, could still be regarded as combat-related and therefore ineligible for compensation, the officials said.

However, cases involving soldiers who accidentally fire their weapons or traffic accidents involving supply convoys could warrant payments to the victims if negligence is proved.

U.S. military officials said they had settled 1,168 compensation claims totaling $262,263. Most were for property damage, and no payment was more than $15,000.

But officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, could provide no information about compensation for deaths.

"How much is an injury worth?

How much is a life worth?

It all depends on the value of a life in Iraq. The value of a life in Iraq is probably a lot less than it would be in the U.S. or Britain," one official said.

Sunday's briefing highlighted inconsistencies in the handling of compensation payments: In the city of Fallouja, where U.S. soldiers killed 18 people and wounded 78 in April, the American military commander in the area has been paying $1,500 for each fatality and $500 for each injury, Associated Press reported.

The commander was apparently using discretionary funds supplied for his operations.

One official at Sunday's briefing said he would investigate and, if necessary, tell the commander to stop making such payments.

Death marches at double in Iraq but US public unaware

    By Julian Borger in Washington
    August 5 2003

United States military casualties in Iraq are running at more than twice the number most Americans have been led to believe they are.

The public is largely unaware of a high number of accidents, suicides and other non-combat deaths.

Since May 1, when President George Bush called an end to combat operations, 52 of his troops have been killed by hostile fire, according to Pentagon figures.

But the total of deaths from all causes is much higher at 112.

The other unreported cost of the war for the United States is the number of wounded - 827.

But unofficial figures put the total in the thousands.

Many of the wounded have lost limbs.

The number of US combat deaths since the start of the war is 166, which is 19 more than the toll in the first Gulf war.

The passing of that benchmark last month scotched the perception that the US had scored an easy victory.

The death toll this time is 248 when accidents and suicides are included.

Niger president challenges Blair government over uranium allegations

    By Barbara Slaughter
    5 August 2003

The prime minister of Niger, Hama Hamadou, has demanded that British prime minister Tony Blair put up or shut up over his continued allegations that Saddam Hussein had sought to purchase uranium from the African country.

In his first interview since it was claimed that his country had been approached by Iraq,

Hamadou told Britain's Sunday Telegraph, on July 28, that Blair must produce proof of the allegation.

Niger had never had diplomatic or bilateral relations with Iraq, he said, accusing the British and US government of mistreating his country, which sent 500 troops to support the Gulf War in 1991, by making the claim.

"Is this how Britain and America treat their allies?

If Britain has evidence to support its claim then it has only to produce it for everybody to see.

    Our conscience is clear.

    We are innocent," Hamadou said.

Afghanistan: Warlords Implicated in New Abuses

Report Details Threats to Women's Rights, Freedom of Expression

(New York, July 29, 2003) - Afghan warlords and political strongmen supported by the United States and other nations
are engendering a climate of fear in Afghanistan that is threatening efforts to adopt a new constitution and could derail national elections scheduled for mid-2004, Human Rights Watch said in a new report released today.

"Human rights abuses in Afghanistan are being committed by gunmen and warlords who were propelled into power by the United States and its coalition partners after the Taliban fell in 2001.

These men and others have essentially hijacked the country outside of Kabul.

With less than a year to go before national elections, Afghanistan's human rights situation appears to be worsening."

A BILL TO REVOKE THE BUSH ORDER ON PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS

Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Bob Graham (D-FL) introduced a bill to revoke President Bush's November 2001 executive order that imposed new restrictions on public access to presidential records from past administrations.

The Bush order "greatly restricts access to Presidential papers by forcing all requests for documents, no matter how innocuous, to be approved by both the former President and current White House.

In this way the order goes against the letter and the spirit of the Presidential Records Act," said Sen. Bingaman on July 31.

The new bill, which corresponds to similar legislation introduced by Rep. Doug Ose in the House, would rescind the Bush order and restore the procedures established by President Reagan in 1989.

A lawsuit brought by historians and others challenging the order is still pending.

U.S. wants Saddam, but dead - not alive

The bombing of a Pan Am airliner filled with Americans two years later may have been revenge for this attack.

    Murder breeds murder.

Now, the latest irksome Arab leader is in Washington's gun sights.

Time seems to be running out for Iraq's fugitive former president, Saddam Hussein.

Chances are Saddam, like his sons, will be killed in a Bonnie and Clyde-style shootout.

He is unlikely to be captured, unless incapacitated.

The Bush administration will be delighted not to put Saddam on public trial.

    Dead dictators tell no tales.

The White House would much prefer to display a bullet-riddled Saddam as a trophy to divert mounting criticism over U.S. casualties in Iraq and the litany of falsehoods it used to drive America to war.

If put on public trial, Saddam would have a field day revealing the embarrassing alliance between his brutal regime and Washington:

    Functionally Insane Americans

    By David McGowan

August 2, 2003—There have been many attempts made, by both the legal and mental health communities, to define "insanity."

But it seems to me that that term can be most succinctly defined as: "a disconnection from reality."

And the severity of any individual's insanity is a function of the degree of that person's disconnection from reality.

That definition, of course, is entirely dependent on how "reality" is defined.

From the point of view of the state, "reality" is whatever the shapers of public opinion say it is.

Anyone who disagrees with the voices of authority is, therefore, insane.

From that perspective, people such as, for instance, yours truly, are completely bonkers.

But if we base our definition on a relatively objective reality, then most of the people that I know are, without question, insane.

Most of my relatives are insane.

Most of my friends are insane.

Most of the people that I work with are insane.

Damn near everyone in the country is at least mildly insane.

A very large majority are moderately to severely insane.

And according to polls, at least a third are stark raving mad.

These people hold beliefs that are clearly delusional—that have absolutely no connection to reality.

And they persist in holding these beliefs even when not a shred of evidence can be produced to support them.

And no, I'm not talking about people who believe in UFOs, reincarnation, and the Loch Ness Monster.

And I'm also not talking about people who believe in some supreme spiritual entity.

I'm talking about people who believe that 'weapons of mass destruction' have been uncovered in Iraq . . . who believe that 'weapons of mass destruction' were used against our troops over there . . . who even believe that 'weapons of mass destruction' is something other than a arbitrary term cooked up recently by Uncle Sam to describe weapons systems possessed by our 'enemies,' regardless of the actual destructive capability of those systems

[I can see how the Administration falls perfectly within my own favorite definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. -v]

Religious zealotry and the crisis of American democracy

The danger of religious fundamentalism has been present in the American political bloodstream since the arrival of the Puritans.

Now, with a government of religious conservatives locked in a polarising mindset of us-them and good-evil, the threat it poses is not just to American freedom, but to the world's.

US Nobel Laureate Slams Bush Gov't as "Worst" in American History

BERLIN - American Nobel Prize laureate for Economics George A. Akerlof lashed out at the government of US President George W. Bush, calling it the "worst ever" in American history, the online site of the weekly Der Spiegel magazine
    reported Tuesday.

"I think this is the worst government the US has ever had in its more than 200 years of history.

It has engaged in extradordinarily irresponsible policies not only in foreign policy and economics but also in social and environmental policy," said the 2001 Nobel Prize laureate who teaches economics at the University of California in Berkeley.

"This is not normal government policy.

Now is the time for (American) people to engage in civil disobedience.

I think it's time to protest -- as much as possible," the 61-year-old scholar added.

Akerlof has been recognized for his research that borrows from sociology, psychology, anthropology and other fields to determine economic influences and outcomes.

His areas of expertise include macro-economics, monetary policy and poverty.

    Protocol Be Damned
    By Glenn Scherer, Salon.com
    July 30, 2003 Issue

The United States may have withdrawn from the Kyoto Protocol on global warming, but the united states are ready to comply.

Last week Glenn Scherer of Salon.com reported that a bipartisan group of governors from several Northeastern states are expected to announce their commitment to the reduction of greenhouse gases and the implementation of sustainable alternatives to fossil fuel.

"I think what you'll see is nearly every Mid-Atlantic and New England state agreeing to join in a regional [carbon dioxide] cap and trade regime," said Bradley Campbell, commissioner of New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection.

    Come gather 'round people

Can we save ourselves in time?
"The times they are a-changin'," said Bob Dylan in 1963. Could he have foreseen that US citizens would lose their constitutionally guaranteed freedoms before his life was through? Can we honor John Lennon's legacy and "Give Peace a Chance?" It's up to us to fight for our rights and for what is right. Here you'll find political commentary, activism opportunities, views on news and more — all served with a twist, a song and a smile.

    About A-Changin' Times

    I'm just sittin here watchin'
the wheels go 'round and 'round.
I really love to watch 'em roll.
No longer riding on that merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go.

    John Lennon

Yep. That's me, too. Watchin' the wheels and singin' outta tune. No wonder I'm dizzy most of the time! The wheels in the world are seemingly spinning out of control. We see exponential growth in some areas, a winding down in others. There are war and hate in one arena, love and unity in another — all born of one event. Astounding fortunes made by some, mean staggering losses for others — within all industries — all at the same time. Earth changes are quaking the very ground beneath our feet while the sun is wreaking havoc with the weather.

This is our opportunity to change our outlook and move forward in a new way, with a willingness to release previously held ideas, let go and to open to possibilities we might not have considered before. We will be required to use creatively what we already have in new ways, and, even if we have to "fake it 'til we make it," it's an opportunity to learn. And it's an opportunity to take action — to let our voices be heard to make a difference, to find solutions, to make a change.

There is another way of looking at things and A-Changin' Times will provide support as we all make our way through this labyrinthine new world.

    Love, peace and clarity,

    Veralynne

Thanks for your contributions, all; Bill, Colleen, Leo, Raff, Johanne, all the rest and those to come, your submissions and enthusiasm are invaluable. Bloggers, your blogs and links are inspiring. Readers, your links and referrals to and recommendations of ACT to friends and family are priceless. We all know folks who could benefit from "another way of looking at things." Meet the ACTivists

Lisa contributes to ACT from her base on the East Coast of the U.S. While her "Giftedly Outspoken" tagline may have started as a joke, it has proven to be valid! Her dedication to the philosophy of living simply and leaving no footprints on the Earth will reveal itself concerning consumer and health issues, employment crises, environmental activism, animal rights and much more. Lisa is learning to live the "cultural creative" lifestyle which will become more of a necessity for our survival in the days to come. In the meantime, her knowledge of bringing issues to light for grassroots activism will serve to accomplish our goals of making required changes in Washington.

DUG is our West Coast U.S. correspondent. A long-time supporter of ACT's goals, DUG is a prolific researcher and sharer of news and views from off the beaten track. He's seen the writing on the wall for a long time and his caring and altruistic nature motivates him to make every effort to help people understand what's going on under the mainstream media radar. DUG's progressive views and nose for progressive news is much appreciated here. Blog on, DUG!

Working his universal magic from a beach base in Australia, Pip's motto, Carpe Diem or "Seize the Day!", has served him well in approaching and accomplishing his goals of reaching other people. Pip's big heart drives him to research and present information that piques the curiosity, soothes the soul, and motivates those he touches to live life fully. Often entertaining and always informative his own weblog, Wilson's Blogmanac, is a daily "must visit" for thousands around the world. We at ACT are very fortunate to have his interest and caring mastery of the blogging art, for his technical as well as spiritual support and friendship.

Also from Australia, Lucy mentors, facilitates workshops and teaches in the field of personal and spiritual growth. Drawing on Buddhist, Christian and Hindu spiritualities, her website, Inspired Presence, is a creative presentation of her influences, artistic and spiritual. Lucy has recently started working with intuitive tools such as the Mythical Tarot and the Tao Oracle to assist people along their life journeys. Lucy brings to this service poetry's powerful use of symbolism and metaphor -- hence, The Lyrical Oracle, speaking with refreshing beauty and timeless truth, offering you insight, choice and power. Lucy's background provides experience and understanding which she uses in her inspired communication of the wisdom of the cards.

A motorcycle mama, a rock and roller and a true cultural creative, Jeannine (J-9), from the heart of America, brings a brilliant sense of humor to ACT, along with her sense of justice, peace and environmental devotion. J-9 is currently facing a health challenge, and we're looking forward to her great attitude and strength bringing her back to her giving, activist self in short order. J-9 shares Veralynne's enthusiasm for using music and the "hippie" philosophy of minimal consumerism and giving, in revealing the truth and in encouraging the healing of the planet and its global rifts among nations and people.
    Tell J-9 You've Read It!

Veralynne may be Owner/Editor of ACT, but she's merely the ringleader, having been blessed with the voluntary efforts of a group of very different yet like-minded people with gifts to share. Veralynne fancies herself a proud dilettante and "hippie wannabe," reaching back into America's wealth of wisdom from our recent history for philosophy and guidelines to deal with today's issues of war and peace, injustice and lack of love for our mother planet. It's very easy to be cynical these days, but with ACT, Veralynne hopes to temper the pain and confusion we feel with music, creativity, progressive participation in the political process and sharing of ideas, attitudes and ACTions.
